Yoga for Emotional Intelligence is an embodied Social Emotional Learning program that shows students how to address tough emotional situations, process these experiences, and relate to their peers. Students learn how to identify emotions in the body through meditation and how to shift mood with movement. It is offered in schools, recovery centers, and workplaces.
Jeannie Harrison is the founder of Gro Huntington, a recovery fellowship that unites those suffering from addiction with natural healing. Loyal to her yoga practice for a decade to manage her mental health, she developed Yoga EQ to help her students build resilience and prevent relapse. Meghan Salter is an elementary Talented and Gifted teacher in Cabell County, WV. She began to notice that her students had the unique struggle of noticing more than their peers but not having the emotional maturity to handle these situations. She reached out to Jeannie to do a yoga demonstration in her classroom and Yoga EQ Schools was born! |
Samantha Mize, Yoga EQ Schools Teacher
It's all about the little things. From the little things that can be stressful, like meeting deadlines for work or forgetting your pencil at school, to the little things that can be helpful, like eating fruits and vegetables every day or genuinely smiling with the people around you: these things matter. With a degree in psychology, Sam understands that it's the little things in life that add up. Starting as a teen, she took up yoga as a form of gentle exercise in solitude at her home. While in college, her yoga practice extended to a group setting. Finding yoga as a fun way to get exercise and relieve stress, Sam wanted to share this experience with others, and hence took on a 200 hour teacher training program at Studio 8 in WV in 2017. Shortly after, she teamed up with Karma Yoga Institute and earned a certificate in teaching Yoga for Emotional Intelligence (Yoga EQ) to school children and adults. Recently moving from WV to Raleigh, NC, Sam continues practicing yoga in her home--looking forward to new opportunities to come and adding up all the little things along the way. |
